GRAVENSTEIN (GRAASTEN) 1920 Pro-Danish, Anti-German Notgeld 50Pf/1Mk Denmark

$ 29.95

Rarer notes printed entirely in Danish. The 50 Pfennig note depicts the German imperial eagle (Reichsadler) symbol being torn open and obliterated by an image of the Danish flag and a rising sun with the year 1920 emblazoned upon it. And indeed, this part of Nordschleswig did become part of Denmark in the 1920 plebiscite, and today the town is known as Gråsten (Graasten). The German name of the town, Gravenstein, survives, however, as the name for a variety of apple that originally came from this region.

CONDITION: AUNC, age spots, see photos
